Wrath of the Gods

Concept

The players are gods that are fighting one another for the faith and power that the limited number of subjects in the neighboring towns can provide. Faith and power are currency used by the gods to advance their influence or gain themselves powerful abilities. You win by either gaining enough fame and influence from holding the mecca city of this land or by killing off the other players before they take your followers from you.

Our goal in creating this game was to try and allow for a variety of play styles that can act in tandem and balance them to be equally feasible to complete. We also wanted items to permanently alter gameplay while also giving the gods nuanced traits based giving them distinct identities.

Made: Print and Play Boardgame

Programs Used: Photoshop, Illustrator

My Work:

  • I filled the position of project lead, deciding task distribution and team time management.

  • The rules were decided based on team input but the majority of the final product was designed by me.

  • I was responsible for all color choice, emblems and line work cleanup for the cards and character artwork.

  • Created the design for the map layout.

  • Created all of the game lore and character backstories.

Limitations and mechanics

*This game was created with the concept of allowing for player choice in both how they play and the ways in which they can optimize these play styles. This allowed for offensive, defensive and monetary play styles.*

Limitations: This was a game done over the course of a month and a half for a class project with 4 total group members whom were in charge of character design, player piece modeling, card artwork and designing some of the ability cards. Balancing ability cards and node control combat were issues that largely were reliant on the play styles of the player and in some cases could be overpowered with the right interactions. This made balancing them challenging, but in the end we decided to keep the overpowered nature of many of the abilities in favor of balancing their prices to give a cost/benefit decision to each. We integrated 2 different currency systems, 3 card decks and the need for resource management/control. This lead to some issues regarding multitasking and documentation keeping, leading to us simplifying the system by limiting each mechanic to only affect specific aspect of the game.

Mechanics:

  • Energy currency system: purchases both temporary and permanent upgrades to your god adding to your god's character and potentially altering how you play them.

  • Clearly identifiable and unique gods with individual benefits and colorful backstories.

  • Follower system: acts as both a secondary monetary system and a defensive measure for your resource nodes.

  • God combat: die based with modifiers coming from items purchased.

  • Multiple win conditions: allowing for different means of play.
